Day 1: Rishikesh to Lohajung (2,300 m): 270 km drive in 9–10 hours

Your Brahmatal trek journey begins with a long yet scenic drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung, the official base camp of the trek. Covering a distance of about 270 km, the drive takes around 9 to 10 hours depending on road conditions. The route follows the Alaknanda River valley, offering spectacular views of rivers, forests, and mountain settlements throughout the way.

The road passes through some of the most significant towns and confluences of Uttarakhand, including Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the sacred Ganga, followed by Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag. Each stop showcases the cultural richness and natural beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas. As the journey continues, you’ll notice the scenery gradually changing from fertile valleys to dense pine, oak, and deodar forests with glimpses of towering Himalayan peaks.

By evening, you will arrive at Lohajung (7,600 ft), a quaint mountain village that serves as the base camp for the Brahmatal Trek. On clear days, Lohajung offers enchanting views of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul peaks, setting the tone for the adventure ahead. After checking into your guesthouse or homestay, you’ll attend a short trek briefing session with your trek leader, covering the route plan, safety instructions, and equipment distribution. Spend the night at Lohajung to rest and acclimatize before the trek begins the following day.

Day 2: Lohajung to Bekaltal (3,010 m): 6 km trek in 4–5 hours

After a refreshing night at Lohajung, your trek to Bekaltal begins. The trail starts with a gradual ascent through charming Himalayan villages and dense oak and rhododendron forests. This section of the trek is filled with lush greenery, chirping birds, and occasional clearings that open up to stunning views of snow-covered mountains in the distance. The trail is around 6 km long and takes about 4–5 hours to cover at a steady pace.

As you trek deeper into the forest, the canopy of oak and rhododendron trees creates a magical atmosphere, especially during spring when the rhododendrons bloom in vibrant shades of red and pink. During winter, this entire stretch gets blanketed with fresh snow, making the trek even more picturesque and enchanting. Small streams and mountain brooks along the way add to the serenity of the trail.

By afternoon, you will reach Bekaltal (9,885 ft), a serene high-altitude lake nestled in the middle of the forest. During the winter months, the lake often freezes, presenting a surreal view of a shimmering sheet of ice surrounded by snow-laden trees. Your campsite will be set up near the lake, where you can relax, sip hot tea, and soak in the peaceful surroundings.

In the evening, enjoy a warm dinner at the campsite under a starry sky. Bekaltal is known for its quiet, mystical beauty and marks your first night camping amidst the wilderness of the Brahmatal Trek. Rest well, as the following day’s trek will take you closer to the highlight of the journey — Brahmatal Lake.

Day 3: Bekaltal to Brahmatal via Telandi Top (3,180 m): 7 km trek in 5–6 hours

After breakfast at the campsite, you begin your trek from Bekaltal to Brahmatal, one of the most scenic stretches of the entire journey. The trail gradually ascends through dense oak and rhododendron forests before opening up to vast snowfields during winter. The trek distance is around 7 km, which usually takes 5–6 hours to complete.

The highlight of the day is crossing the Telandi Top (10,935 ft). The climb to this ridge is moderately challenging but extremely rewarding. As you reach the top, you’re greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of towering Himalayan peaks like Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. During winter, the snow-covered meadows here appear like an endless white carpet, making it a picture-perfect setting for trekkers and photographers alike.

From Telandi Top, the trail descends gradually, leading you through snow-laden paths and open landscapes until you reach Brahmatal (10,440 ft). The lake holds deep mythological significance, believed to be the meditation place of Lord Brahma. In winter, the lake remains frozen, surrounded by snow, giving it a mystical and tranquil aura.

By evening, you will set up camp near Brahmatal Lake. Surrounded by high-altitude ridges and under a clear star-lit sky, this campsite is one of the most magical stops on the trek. Enjoy hot dinner by the campfire and rest well, as the next day you’ll trek to Brahmatal Top, the highest point of the journey.

Day 4: Brahmatal to Brahmatal Top (3,735 m) and back to campsite: 7 km trek in 5–6 hours

This is the most exciting day of the Brahmatal Trek, as you hike to the highest point — Brahmatal Top (12,250 ft). The trek begins early in the morning after breakfast at camp, covering a distance of around 7 km (5–6 hours round trip). The trail gradually ascends from Brahmatal Lake through open ridgelines and snowfields, offering panoramic views all along the way.

As you climb higher, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. From the top, you are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views of some of the greatest Himalayan peaks, including Mount Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Hathi Ghoda, and Kamet. On clear days, you can even spot the mighty Roopkund Trail and Ali Bugyal meadows from this vantage point. The summit offers a perfect opportunity for photography, meditation, and simply soaking in the grandeur of the Himalayas.

After spending some time at the summit, you begin your descent back to the Brahmatal campsite. The downhill walk is easier and quicker, giving you another chance to admire the snow-laden meadows, forest clearings, and distant valleys. By afternoon, you return to camp, where a hot meal awaits.

The evening at the campsite is a time to relax, share stories with fellow trekkers, and reflect on the breathtaking summit experience. With the starry Himalayan sky above and the silence of the mountains around, this night becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trek.

Day 5: Brahmatal to Lohajung via Daldum (2,300 m): 7 km trek in 5–6 hours

On the final trekking day, you will descend from Brahmatal campsite back to Lohajung, passing through Daldum along the way. The trek covers around 7 km and usually takes 5–6 hours at a relaxed pace. The trail begins with a gentle descent through open meadows, gradually leading back into thick oak and rhododendron forests.

The route is filled with scenic beauty — snow patches in winter, blooming rhododendrons in spring, and birdsong echoing through the forests. The descent is easier compared to the previous day’s climb, allowing you to fully enjoy the peaceful charm of the trail. At Daldum, you’ll find a small clearing surrounded by forests, often used as a campsite for trekkers. From here, the path continues downhill until you reach Lohajung (7,600 ft) by afternoon.

Once you arrive at Lohajung, check into your guesthouse or homestay, where warm meals and comfortable rooms await. In the evening, you can explore the quaint village, interact with locals, or simply relax while reminiscing about the adventure. This is also a good time to celebrate the completion of your Brahmatal Trek with your team.

Day 6: Lohajung to Rishikesh (340 m): 270 km drive in 9–10 hours

The final day of your Brahmatal Trek itinerary begins early in the morning with a drive from Lohajung back to Rishikesh. The distance is approximately 270 km, and the journey takes around 9–10 hours by road. After breakfast, you will board your vehicle and retrace the scenic route along the Alaknanda River valley.

On the way, you’ll once again pass through the famous confluences of Uttarakhand — Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag — each holding great spiritual and cultural significance. The drive offers you another chance to admire the mountain landscapes, river valleys, and traditional Himalayan towns before returning to the plains.

By evening, you will arrive in Rishikesh, marking the official end of your Brahmatal Trek adventure. With unforgettable memories of snow-covered trails, frozen lakes, panoramic summit views, and peaceful nights under the stars, this trek will stay with you forever. You can either choose to rest in Rishikesh or continue your onward journey back home.

How to Prepare & What to Pack for the Brahmatal Trek

Before going on the Brahmatal Trek, it is essential to understand how to prepare for a Himalayan adventure and pack smartly. A well-prepared backpack ensures that you can fully enjoy the trek without unnecessary discomfort. Lack of proper gear can often turn a beautiful experience into a difficult one. Here’s a detailed backpacking and preparation guide to help you get ready:

Mandatory Documents

Always keep your documents safe and easily accessible. Carry a valid government ID proof (Aadhar Card, driver’s license, or passport), a medical fitness certificate, and adventure insurance. These are compulsory for forest permissions and safety clearances.

Trekking Accessories

A sturdy backpack with a rain cover is a must. Wear waterproof trekking shoes and carry trekking poles for better balance. Other essentials include a sun cap, sunglasses, headlamp or flashlight, lunch box, water bottle, and a power bank. A camera is highly recommended to capture the stunning landscapes of Brahmatal, especially its frozen alpine lakes and panoramic summit views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti. Checking the weather forecast and carrying a simple trek map of the trail also adds to your preparedness.

Toiletries & Hygiene

Hygiene is often overlooked but very important. Carry biodegradable soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, tissues/wet wipes, hand sanitizer, lip balm, sunscreen, a small towel, and a comb. These small essentials ensure you stay fresh and comfortable throughout the trek.

Clothing Essentials

Layering is the key to surviving Himalayan weather, as temperatures fluctuate between day and night. Always pack moisture-wicking, warm, and waterproof clothing.

Spring, Summer & Monsoon: 1 trek pant, 1 nylon innerwear, 1 lightweight shirt, 1 fleece sweater, 1 poncho.
Autumn & Early Winter: 1 trek pant, 1 pair thermals, 1 t-shirt, 1 fleece sweater, 1 padded jacket, 1 poncho.
Peak Winter: 1 trek pant, 1 pair thermals, 1 t-shirt, 1 fleece jacket, 1 padded jacket, 1 windproof jacket, 1 pair waterproof gloves.

Along with these, carry extra essentials depending on trek duration:

  • 3 T-shirts (wear one, carry two)

  • 2 pairs of thermals (wear one, carry one)

  • 2 quick-dry trek pants (wear one, carry one)

  • 3 pairs of socks (wear one, carry two)

  • 2 pairs of gloves (wear one, carry one)

  • 1 padded jacket (keep handy in your backpack for sudden temperature drops)

Medical Kit

Your health is your top priority on the trek. Carry a basic first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and personal medicines. It is also wise to keep altitude sickness tablets, blister care kits, and any prescribed medication.

Physical Fitness Preparation for the Brahmatal Trek

If you’re physically fit and aware of the safety precautions for the Brahmatal Trek, you’ll enjoy the beauty of the trail far more effectively compared to trekkers with weaker endurance or insufficient preparation. Fitness ensures that fatigue, steep climbs, or high-altitude challenges don’t limit your experience. With proper training, you’ll be able to focus on the breathtaking landscapes, frozen alpine lakes, and the joy of trekking amidst Himalayan peaks like Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

Why Fitness Matters for Brahmatal
